Time Manager 3000
What kind of robot would you like?
Back in middle school, I could play games after school and still get everything done by my 8:30 pm bedtime. Now it seems nearly impossible to go to bed that early. Although I believe that part of the reason for this is that my homework is more difficult and time-consuming, it’s also because my time-management skills are not the best. Some nights, I feel lost on my journey to bed, with procrastination lurking around the corner and surprise attacks from sleepiness slowing me down. On those nights, I wish for a time management robot to help guide my journey.
A time management robot would have two main functions: it would help me plan my evening to achieve the earliest possible bedtime, and ensure I work efficiently at all times. It would be like my Google Maps for working; it would give me an ideal route and adjust depending on how my trip is going. Before I begin my homework, I like to think about the order I should finish it in, depending on how I’m feeling about the work or on my estimate of how long it should take. Although this is helpful sometimes, there are cases where I either have no clue how to tackle all my work or struggle to make a decision. For example, a perfect example is writing these personal essays; every time I start a new essay, I have to look at all the prompts and think about what I could write for each of them, which is sometimes helpful but also very time-consuming for me. The robot would help me get started by choosing a prompt for me and giving me questions to consider to help me get started (obviously, it wouldn’t produce any creative ideas, though, as that goes against school AI policies).
Additionally, my robot would help me maximize the use of my time to finish my homework as soon as possible. This would include creating a good environment for me to stay focused, scheduling breaks for when I am getting tired, and keeping me safe from one of my biggest enemies: procrastination. Procrastination is constantly a threat to me, even if I try to take measures to avoid it. As a matter of fact, while writing this essay, I was already losing the battle, frequently opening up YouTube or checking my phone out of boredom. However, my robot would be programmed to have a variety of ways to keep me on task at all times. It might help remove distractions from around me, make my tasks more interesting, bring me rewards for my progress, or even threaten to obliterate my phone.
With this robot, I think I would be able to get done with my tasks a lot quicker, without putting them aside. However, after thinking about what it would be like to have this robot, I realized that in the long term, I would become overreliant on this technology and not learn proper ways to manage time myself. I can already think of many alternative ways to have the benefits of the robot without actually having one. When planning out tasks, I could ask others for suggestions or sometimes just go with the flow. To combat procrastination, I could give my little sister my phone to mess around with until I finish all my homework. That would definitely get me hustling. As of right now, I don’t think I really need a time-management robot at hand; I think the idea of it is enough for me to figure out ways to manage my time without the help of technology.
p.s. I was writing this essay, and then halfway through, I started getting bored and actually procrastinating because I felt like I wasn't really going anywhere with this (but I didn't wanna start over). So I would appreciate some feedback/suggestions on where I could go with it (or maybe I should really start over; I have about 50 words btw). I also don't know if I have enough narration/reflection (idk which one I have because they're mostly my ideas, but they're not reflections necessarily), so I'd like some input on that too.
Thank you!
Hello Yuto! I think your essay has a really great first draft. I think you go over aspects that you want your robot to fix extremely well. However, to fix your issue I think you might want to have a reflection that leads into your conclusion or is combined with it. This is usually something I attempt to apply to my essays as well, so I think it's a good idea to give this suggestion to you. If I were to build a reflection on an essay like this I would start by going over specific instances (stories) for when you would've liked this robot of yours to help manage your time properly. Overall, this is a great start and I think that all you need is a strong reflection/conclusion.
ReplyDeleteHey Yuto!
ReplyDeleteI like how you considered that having such a fantastic machine could easily become a crutch. If it ever stopped working, the procrastination could even become worse. Maybe you could suggest a method where instead of doing the work for you, it helps you learn to create a schedule. Over time you wouldn't need the robot at all, as it would have helped you learn habits instead of just enforcing rules. I think you need to narrate a specific experience or type of experience more. Most of this essay just describes the robot, but there is not as much about why you want it.
Hi Yuto! I enjoyed reading your idea for a time management robot and how you think you would use it effectively. Your overall essay is pretty good, but I would definitely suggest adding in a little bit more narration to balance out your essay's reflection. Maybe you could do that by going into more detail on what your hypothesized robot would do to keep you on task. You mention a reward system and even threatening in your essay but maybe you could go into more detail about that. You could also talk a little bit more about the robot itself (i.e. what it would look like, if it would be programmed into devices, etc.) or talk more about how just thinking about the robot helps prevent your procrastination in some way. Because while your essay is really good right now, I would suggest to keep expanding on the narration and you'll be golden.
